Late Night Eats

Late night eats are a right of passage in college. Or at least they were for me and my friends. I’m nostalgic about the late night food runs we’d make almost nightly. We lived in our sorority house and dinner was served at an early 5 p.m. Monday to Thursday. We had a great cook; we absolutely loved her and her food. But when you’re a college student and you eat dinner at 5 p.m., chances are really high that you’re going to be hungry again later. Whether it’s needed sustenance for a late night of studying or adding stomach contents after a night on Court Street. Luckily for us then, and for students now, late night eats in Athens have a strong following.

Back in the day, for me that was the early-mid 1990’s, W. Union Street was home to a host of buggies, carts, and trailers. There was the infamous Burrito Buggy, plus the Late Night Pizza Buggy, the Bagel Buggy, the Gyro Man, and we had Burger King and Taco Bell, the world’s largest they claimed. (I’m hoping my fellow alumni and townies will chime in with comments about what their favorite buggy was.)

Unfortunately, the buggy and cart scene has diminished over the years but there are still a number of places that will welcome you for your own late night eats. Whether grabbing a burrito to enjoy on your walk back to South Green or going to the diner for a more complete meal after closing the library, you’ll find a place for late night eats.
